How might we reconnect with our ancestor through I.O.T. ( Internet of Things)?
Influenced by Buddhism and Taoism, China has its unique worship culture, in which the most particular and extensive one is paper offerings. However, the traditional “burning paper money (joss paper)” will result in many negative influences to both people and the environment. For example, the burning process will produce some noxious gas such as smoke, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. In addition, the plant ash left by burning will pollute the soil and ruin the road. It is such a waste of social resource. Burning paper money on roadside may also cause car accidents. It is even worse to burn it in the forest because it may cause fire.
No one wants to see the effect that "burning paper money" causes, but keeping traditions alive is important. Thus, my challenge is how to continue the tradition of paper offerings in a new form.
After research, some key elements in the burning process popped up - plant ash, heat, communication, and Shui Script. Then, I started to play with these words. I made my final design by combining them: taking the plant ash after burning as the original material, taking the heat in burning process as impetus, and then utilizing 3D Printing Technology to get Shui Script, so as to make communication between the living and the dead.
